Higher Institute for the Visual Arts (HISK), Antwerpen, B [http://www.hisk.edu/english/en.htm]
'The praxis of the visual arts is permeated and underpinned by a plethora of theoretical considerations, originating from such divergent fields as the history of ideas, philosophy, cultural studies, the history of art, sociology and positive sciences. … For this very reason, it is of great importance that the Higher Institute bestows ample attention upon cultural, political and social theory. … HISK has an important role in bridging the time-honoured gap or conflict between making and thinking, between practice and theory.' (1) The HISK is a medium-size postgraduate institute with various workshops and a very extensive list of 'visiting professors'. The period of study is between 2 and 3 years, and is completed with a 'laureateship'. What is remarkable is that the institute targets older students, as opposed to many others which accept increasingly younger students.
